Under the direction of the school management team, this position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the robotics and electronics lab. This position helps to build and maintain robotic platforms and electronic devices and infrastructure, as well as their associated software and documentation; actively teaches students how to use the required tools to accomplish their tasks and supervises their use of such tools in order to maintain safety standards; and manages organization of two separate laboratories used by students and faculty, manages inventory of electronic components and laboratory materials, and performs inventory control. Success in this position includes creating a laboratory environment that enhances student and faculty productivity; exploring new materialsand tools as they become available; making creative contributions to the academic output of the laboratory; and demonstrating competency and sensitivity in working in an academic community that is diverse in all aspects. Responsibilities: Your role as Robotics and Electronics Laboratory Technician will involve: Laboratories Coordination and Support Establishes lab organization priorities and ensures adherence to schedules and safety guidelines. Acts as a technical expert to instruct and resolve issues for faculty and students related to operating as issues arise. This includes providing technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment, techniques, and the analysis of results. Must stay current on new developments, skills, and knowledge in robotics, electronics, rapid prototyping, and related fields. Educates students in a variety of equipment use. Prepares the labs for academic experiments/projects. Coordinates the execution of experiments, projects and services with students and faculty to help produce state-of-the-art research. Verifies the work of students to ensure efficiency and quality of output. Coordinates and participates in field activities of the robotics and electronics laboratory, as needed. Undertakes other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Performs thorough risk assessment for all tools and equipment. Creates documentation for reproducibility purposes and creates guidelines of use for robotics platforms and lab tools and equipment. Inventory, Tool, and Equipment Maintenance Maintains and calibrates equipment (soldering stations, 3D printers, electronics workbench equipment, and other laboratory equipment) and performs repairs. Arranges for servicing to ensure equipment is properly maintained and calibrated, when needed. Manages small tools and small electronic components. Ensures the stock of consumables does not run low and the storage classification of components is maintained. Keeps and tracks tool and equipment inventory, determines which tools are needed, recommends equipment and material purchases to purchasing staff. Monitors mobile and stationary robotic platforms to assure proper performance for classes and projects and schedules repairs and maintenance. Manages maintenance and calibration of customized motion capture systems and robotics arenas, including calibration of projectors, cameras, trackers, etc. Ensures student compliance with safety regulations in the use of tools and machines, including behavior around moving parts and activities requiring ventilation, as well as the proper storage, handling, and disposal of batteries and other hazardous materials. Reviews, tests, evaluates, and modifies electronics and equipment as needed. Network administration of the digital infrastructure of the lab (services, communication channels, network), maintenance of the robotics lab servers, software development and maintenance of the code repositories of the lab (GitHub, Gitlab). Qualifications: To thrive in this role, you should have: Four years of either appropriate education or experience in an appropriate occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. Must be approachable and highly collaborative. Diligent, and able to strategically conceive and coordinate long-term projects planned over a long period of time. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to work independently as well as on a team.
