A Joint Venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), Thales Alenia Space is a global space manufacturer delivering, for more than 40 years, high-tech solutions for telecommunications, navigation, Earth Observation, environmental management, exploration, science and orbital infrastructures.

Thanks to our diversity of skills, talents and cultures, our customers (governments, institutions, space agencies, telecommunications operators) have Space to Connect, Secure & Defend, Observe & Protect, Explore, Travel & Navigate.

Thales in Spain is a leader in technological solutions applied to Defence, Aeronautics, Security, Transportation and Space and is a global centre for excellence in Space, Security of Critical Infrastructures and Transportation.

With a turnover of €320 million and a staff of 1,200, it exports approximately 40% of its total production principally to the Middle East, North Africa and Latin America.

Within the RAMS service of the Quality Engineering, the activities are carried out under the primary responsibility of the head of service and consist of:

  • Providing Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety (RAMS) engineering expertise and analysis in the development and implementation of Space products.
  • Developing, maintaining and implementing a Dependability (RAM) & Safety programme plan for all project phases addressing the RAMS requirements applicable to the project.
  • Performing RAMS design, analysis, modeling and simulation to specify and verify that the Space products developed at Thales Alenia Space meet the customer requirements during the whole operational lifetime.
  • Representing RAMS in technical meetings involving RAMS-related issues and participating in, influencing, and approving design decisions impacting or potentially impacting RAMS.
  • Attending the Program Design reviews for their respective Product and/or Project areas and providing evaluations & recommendations (RIDs).
  • Reviewing the RAMS Analyses performed by subcontractors.
  • Identifying risks and opportunities with adequate anticipation and proposing mitigation actions.
  • Preparing subsystem & equipment RAMS requirements for relative specifications, interface requirements, and test requirements by analyzing and decomposing customer requirements.
  • Performing trade-off evaluations in conjunction with other attributes such as mass, size, cost, and performance to identify the product RAMS engineering design choices with associated advantages and disadvantages.
  • Evaluating the compliance of designs with RAMS engineering requirements by reviewing technical specifications, designs & design changes for both HW and SW, and suggesting design alternatives where appropriate to enhance reliability based on a knowledge of design feasibility & the RAMS requirements.
  • Supporting the rationale for the selection of the design solution and demonstrating that the design meets the RAMS requirements by performing:
    • Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA) with identification of Single Point Failure
    • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
    • Hardware Software Interaction Analysis
    • Failure Detection Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) analysis
    • Availability / Outage Analysis
    • Maintainability Activities
    • Hazard Analysis
    • Ensuring that RAMS can be verified by reviewing test documentation.
  • Reporting directly to the RAMS Manager RAMS and working closely with other team members, both inside the RAMS team and from other functional teams, to meet the project objectives.

Business Context :

  • To assure the RAMS of products is maintained.
  • To provide RAM designs which meet specifications and budgets.
  • To ensure that Product Design meets the customer requirements.
  • To develop new and creative methods for analyzing equipment designs and problem-solving in order to identify effective design solutions to meet operational and dependability objectives.
  • To work with others as a team member and to enhance the image of RAMS Engineering within the company and with our customers.
  • To maintain high personal productivity while working interactively with many other suppliers and user groups.
  • To keep up to date on new analysis techniques.
  • To respect project deadlines.

Competences :

  • Experience on projects in the context of Safety & RAM assurance.
  • Knowledge of design engineering, particularly electronic design.
  • Competence in RAMS Analysis methods.

A five-years experience in RAMS engineering is preferred.
