Primary Radiation Safety Officer Iberica

Radiation Safety SME supporting Varian Medical Systems Iberica management in all regulatory and operational radiation protection tasks. The position is integrated in the Varian Radiation Safety International professional radiation safety team. The Radiation Safety Officer is participating and supporting all general radiation safety projects to further improve the Varian radiation protection program.

In cooperation with the international radiation safety team, the Radiation Safety Officer acts as the principal subject matter expert resource to Varian’s management for operational and regulatory radiation safety in Spain and Portugal strongly supporting our activities:

  • sales and distribution of Radiotherapy Systems
  • installation and service of medical linear accelerators and integrated kV-IGRT systems
  • service of Ir-192 Afterloaders for Brachytherapy
  • installation and service of the Varian ProBeam proton therapy system

Providing oversight and coordination of radiation safety compliance activities in Spain and Portugal, the RSO will ensure that Varian complies with all relevant radiation safety regulations. A well-coordinated radiation safety compliance program will ensure an efficient radiation safety organization e.g. coordination of training activities, harmonization of procedures/instructions as well as employee radiation safety program.

Major Responsibilities/Tasks:
  • Establish and maintain good working relation with the CSN (Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear) and APA (Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente - Departamento de Emergências e Proteção Radiológica)
  • Ensure compliance with radiation protection regulations, as applicable clarify regulatory requirements for Varian's activities, monitor local radiation safety regulatory environment
  • Strong support of the Proton Therapy project (license application, alignment with customer and CSN on radiation protection, VPS radiation safety officer function)
  • Provide radiation safety training (initial and recurrent) to Varian's radiation workers - developing and updating training material
  • Manage personal dosimetry (assignment of dosimeter, review dosimetry results and conduct for dosimetry results exceeding internal investigation levels)
  • Cross-functional radiation safety support of all Varian teams (sales, installation, service)
  • Perform radiation measurements (workplace assessment/radiation survey/activation analysis)
Minimum Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • CSN recognized Radiation Safety Expert (experto en protección contra las radiaciones ionizantes) - radiation generators and high activity sealed sources.
  • Experienced Radiation Safety Officer / Radiation Safety Expert / Medical Physics Expert
  • Experience in radiation measurements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physics/Health Physics or comparable educational background
  • Very good communication and teaching skills required
  • Proficiency in Spanish and English a must, additional languages a plus
  • Proficient in utilizing business tools such as: E-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
