Storing thermal energy is a significant milestone on the route to energy transition since thermal energy accounts for about 50% of all energy end-use. At the Iberian Centre for Energy Storage Research (CIIAE), we explore the idea of using chemical reactions for the storage of thermal energy. Thermochemical batteries, much like their electrical counterparts, offer high energy storage density and long storage duration. They can be used to store and release heat in domestic environments and industry. The state of the art in this innovative and evolving field requires groundbreaking solutions combining promising materials with new storage concepts.

This position is linked to a European project 4TunaTES aiming at the development of tunable thermochemical energy storage. By leveraging a novel type of chemical reactions, we aim to improve the operational flexibility of thermal batteries for both domestic and industrial use. We seek a bright and passionate candidate ready to tackle the challenges of material design and characterization while closely cooperating with leading universities and research institutions across the EU.

The selected candidate will perform the following tasks:

  1. Developing novel stable and tunable thermochemical materials.
  2. Understanding phase transitions and the effects of doping on thermochemical transformations.
  3. Experimental development of stabilization techniques for the new materials.
  4. Preparation of thermochemical materials for integration into pilot devices.
  5. Authoring and co-authoring scientific publications.
Challenges:
  1. Screening and design of new types of thermochemical materials with tunable thermochemical behaviour.
  2. Ensuring the material stability on micro- and macroscopic scales.

We are looking for a candidate with a graduate degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a similar field and the ability to access PhD programs.
